Security Incident Information Management: Coaching

By pooling together security incident data from international and local NGOs working in areas of risk around the world, humanitarian staff will have a greater access to collective information on security threats and incidents in areas they are delivering programmes. The value added of this project will be analysis of trends rather than access to individual event descriptions. This trend analysis will be accessible through the Security in Numbers Database.

This will be complimented by providing coaching to key INGO security focal points on how to collect, share and communicate relevant data on security incidents and understanding their significance within a wider security context. This will result in an increased understanding of security threats amongst humanitarians working in environments with high or medium levels of risk, as a result enabling them to deliver more effective responses to emergencies.

The coaching will based on four dimensions
Dimension 1: To inform immediate reaction and response to a security incident
Dimension 2: To implement lessons learned after a security incident for follow-up action
Dimension 3: To inform strategic decision-making in the organization
Dimension 4: To understand the NGO humanitarian security context

These four dimensions are illustrated in more detail here and will form the basis of the coaching.

Twenty four organisations will be selected through the application process in which they demonstrate the need for support through coaching in implementing lessons and best practice approaches encouraged in the Security Incident Information Management Guidance. Supplementary information and resources will be provided by the RedR UK coach for these coaching sessions based on needs identified in each session.

Please note that this is a first phase application process to register interest and better understand the support needs of each organisation and facilitate the identification of suitable coaches as early as possible.

The Security Incident Information Guidance handbook will be launched in May, organisations will then be required to demonstrate a need for support in implementing lessons learnt and approaches encouraged in the SIIM guidance handbook which will be made available to the sector for free.

Who can apply?

• Coaching is open to organisations that do not currently contribute to the Security in Numbers Database (SiND) through the Aid in Danger project and those that started contributing after the start of this project (1 December 2016). However, preference will be given to organisations who have either recently joined SiND or are willing to do so.

• In your application you must demonstrate an understanding of the “gaps” or “problem areas” in your internal security incident reporting and monitoring systems and a willingness and a desire to improve these.

• One of the following applies to your organisation:
  It has:
  a) an internal system in place to systematically report all security incidents to HQ
  b) does not have an efficient record system at HQ store and analysis security events or
  c) does have a basic reporting and analysis system in place but would like to make improvements to this system.

If selected, up to 3 members of your organisation will receive tailored coaching based on your specific needs.

Supplementary information and resources will be provided by the RedR UK coach for these coaching sessions based on needs identified in each session.

Structure

Coaching can take place between June 2017 and August 2018 and will be conducted remotely through e-facilitation.

Each successful organisation will be eligible for six coaching sessions. The coaching will be delivered by qualified RedR coaches online via Skype over 6 x 1 hour sessions, 1 session per week.

Each organisation will be able to have a minimum of one and a maximum of three key security staff participate in the sessions. If two or more staff are receiving the coaching in the same organization, they are all required to be present for each coaching session.

You will be matched with a coach based on your application.

Cost

The SIIM project is funded by EU Humanitarian Aid and the coaching is provided free of charge. You Simply need to have a good internet connection during the coaching sessions and a commitment to participate in all 6 sessions.

You do not have to currently contribute to SiND to be able to apply, however, priority will be given to those organisations who are willing to share their security incident data through the Aid in Danger project.
